HVAC Spring Maintenance Tips

HVAC Spring Maintenance Tips

The snow has finally melted, the birds are singing their lovely songs, and the smell of spring is finally here! While we are busy doing our indoor spring cleaning, it is important to not forget about our HVAC systems! Below are some helpful tips that should be taken into account as we are getting ready for warmer weather.

Replace Your Air Filter

This is an easy thing to do, but is also easy to forget. Remembering to change your HVAC air filter will ultimately save the health of your system. If the filter becomes clogged, the HVAC will use more energy to pull in air. The rule of thumb is to replace the filter once a month, especially if you have pets in the home.

Keep The Condensate Drain Clean

When your condensate pipe becomes clogged it can cause your AC system's drain pan to overflow. Reasons why drain lines become clogged are due to rust, algae, and dirt. By adding a 50/50 cleaning solution of water and bleach to the access point, you can keep your condensate pump free of mildew and mold. You can also find commercial grade cleaning solutions at your local hardware store.

The Evaporator Coil Should Always Be Clean

If you want the external evaporator coil to perform efficiently, it needs to be cleaned. You can make a simple solution yourself using distilled water and dishwasher soap. Afterwards, rinse with white vinegar.

Remove Obstructions Surrounding Your Outdoor System

It is very important to keep your outdoor system clean and free of the debris that collects over time, such as: sticks, grass clippings, and leaves. Keep all plants and bushes at least 2 feet away from the system. By doing this, it allows proper air flow.

Check Your Duct Work

Duct work that is ripping or sagging can wreak havoc on your system's efficiency, as well as raising your monthly utility bill!

If you are not comfortable doing any of the above on your own, make an appointment with your local A/C maintenance company.
